The Alpena County Sheriff's Office Marine Division operates 3 different boats in Alpena County. Primary areas of patrol are Long Lake, Beaver Lake, Lake Huron, Devils Lake, Lake Winyah, and the Thunder Bay River. The Marine Division focuses efforts on education in an attempt to gain voluntary compliance with marine laws and safety regulations. Enforcement continues to be a component of marine safety, but education and compliance will create a safe and enjoyable boating environment.
The Alpena County Sheriff's Office Marine Division is funded by two different grants in addition to money from the general fund. The inland lakes and rivers are funded through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Marine Safety Grant. While patrols on Lake Huron are funded by Operation Stone Garden grant obtained through the Department of Homeland Security. The Alpena County Sheriff's Office Marine Division has personnel on call 24/7 to respond when distressed boaters are in need of assistance.
Deputies also teach Boaters Safety classes seasonal or as needed. The Sheriff's Office Marine Division is overseen by Sergeant J.P. Ritter.
